Nova Zembla, The Sound of the Icewhale

about

This track was created for the exhibition 'Louis Apol op Nova Zembla' by museum Panorama Mesdag in Den Hague, the Netherlands. The soundscape was audible with the recreation of the panorama painting created by Apol in 1896.

The audio was played on an eight speaker installation, creating a ambisonic sound environment. You listen to the sounds of crackling ice of the Icefjord of Ilulissat, Greenland. Sounds from the sailing vessel Mae West. Underwater recordings of a bowed electric guitar. The recordings of Bowhead whales were provided by Herman Sips from Icehwale Foundation and David Rothenberg. The whale songs where mostly recorded in the Fram Strait.

Halfway through you hear the sounds of seismic airguns which where also recorded in the Fram Strait. These are sounds used by the gas- and oil exploration industry.

With this soundscape I want to focus attention on the question if the sounds we send out in the Arctic are influencing aquatic life.
