Nova Zembla, The Sound of the Icewhale

by Tristan Visser

/

about

This was part of a multichannel audio installation in Panorama Mesdag, Den Hague in the Netherlands. Nova Zembla is an island in the Arctic. The Icewhale refers to the Bowhead Whale only found in the Arctic region. This piece questions if these animals are disturbed by human made noise in de ocean. Increased shipping and gas and oil exploration in the Arctic means more noise underwater. The animals use sound to navigate and communicate.

Bowhead songs were recorded in Alaska and the Fram Strait as well as the seismic airgun sounds. Other recordings were made in Greenland, Disko Island in 2019.
